Huawei kicked off its annual developer conference today, and it’s just announced HarmonyOS.

The new, open-source platform is ostensibly the final name for its Hongmeng OS.HarmonyOS is “the first microkernel-based distributed OS for all scenarios,” consumer group CEO Richard Yu told attendees at the Huawei Developer Conference.

The new platform supports smartphones, smart speakers, computers, smartwatches, wireless earbuds, cars, and tablets. In fact, Richard Yu says the platform supports RAM sizes ranging from kilobytes to gigabytes.Interestingly enough, Huawei says HarmonyOS won’t support root access. The Huawei CEO also noted that the platform will eventually support a range of apps, specifically noting that HTML5, Linux, and, crucially, Android apps will be compatible.“They will all be able to run on our OS in the future,” Yu says. Yu added that the ARK Compiler used in HarmonyOS app development will also support Kotlin, Java, Javascript, C, and C++.“HarmonyOS 1.0 will be first adopted…

Blacklist is list of items, such as usernames or IP addresses, that are denied access to a certain system or protocol.
When a blacklist is used for access control, all entities are allowed access, except those listed in the blacklist. The opposite of a blacklist is a whitelist, which denies access to all items, except those included in the list.Blacklists have several applications in computing:

1) Web servers often include a blacklist that denies access from specific IP addresses or ranges of IPs, for security purposes.2) Firewalls may use a blacklist to deny access to individual users, systems located in certain regions, or computers with IPs within a certain subnet mask.3) Spam filters often include blacklists that reject certain e-mail addresses and specific message content.4) Programmers may implement blacklists within programs to prevent certain objects from being modified.

Since blacklists deny access to specific entities, they are best used when a limited number of items need to…

Huawei has applied to trademark its own mobile OS as potential Android replacement

Huawei has applied to trademark its own mobile operating system as it prepares for life without Android.

Codenamed ‘Hongmeng OS’, the Chinese tech giant’s software would run independently of Google's Android for the first time on a Huawei smartphone. An official name or release date is yet to be confirmed by the company.

UN data suggests it has requested trademarking in a number of locations, including Canada, South Korea and the European Union.Huawei is thought to have been working on its own OS since 2012, but efforts have been stepped up in the wake of President Trump’s move to add the company to the US trade blacklist. The decision came after the company were deemed to be a national security threat, with specific concerns over its close ties to the Chinese government.Google’s compliance with the ruling means Huawei is set to have its full Android licence revoked. Despite being open-source software, customers outside Asia would lose access to the Google services they have come to …

A blockchain is a digital record of transactions. The name comes from its structure, in which individual records, called blocks, are linked together in single list, called a chain. Blockchains are used for recording transactions made with cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, and have many other applications. Each transaction added to a blockchain is validated by multiple computers on the Internet. These systems, which are configured to monitor specific types of blockchain transactions, form a peer-to-peer network. They work together to ensure each transaction is valid before it is added to the blockchain. This decentralized network of computers ensures a single system cannot add invalid blocks to the chain. When a new block is added to a blockchain, it is linked to the previous block using a cryptographic hash generated from the contents of the previous block. This ensures the chain is never broken and that each block is permanently recorded. It is also intentionally difficult to alter past…

Address Resolution Protocol (arp)

ARP Stands for "Address Resolution Protocol." ARP is a protocol used for mapping an IP address to a computer connected to a local network LAN.

Since each computer has a unique physical address called a MAC address, the ARP converts the IP address to the MAC address.

This ensures each computer has a unique network identification.

The Address Resolution Protocol is used when information sent to a network arrives at the gateway, which serves as the entrance point to the network.

The gateway uses the ARP to locate the MAC address of the computer based on the IP address the data is being sent to.

The ARP typically looks up this information in a table called the "ARP cache." If the address is found, the information is relayed to the gateway, which will send the incoming data to the appropriate machine. It may also convert the data to the correct network format if necessary.

If the address is not found, the ARP broadcasts a "request packet" to other machines on the …

India is setting up an IMEI database to Help Track Lost Phones

India's Department of Telecom (DoT) will soon implement a central register of IMEI numbers to tackle the phone theft menace. The DoT will blacklist IMEI numbers that are reported to it as being stolen or lost, blocking access to cellular networks.

Another objective of the central register will be to make IMEI-based lawful interception easier.

India's Telecom Ministry will soon introduce a Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR), which will have a database of International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers.

IMEI is basically a unique 15-digit number that makes it possible to identify each mobile phone.

The main objective of CEIR will be to bring down the number of mobile theft cases in the country by a significant margin.

Once the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) is implemented, it will allow consumers in India to inform the Department of Telecom (DoT) that their mobile phone has been lost or stolen with the help of a dedicated helpline number.

After they have f…

The tweaked Google search page, which seems to have started rolling out broadly earlier today, is now seemingly live for everyone.

Search Engine Land was also able to confirm from Google that the new design is indeed live for searchers today.

We have seen reports from UK, Austria, Germany, Latvia, Indonesia, Australia, US, and more.
According to the website, Google has been testing the latest design since March this year.
